P-80A Shooting Star for CHS planesides. Early models painted in a light gray finish to seal the exterior. If Japan had not surrendered in August 1945, this aircraft may have seen action by the end of the year. Medal of Honor winner and ace pilot Richard Bong was killed during a test flight, not 24 hours after the first Atomic Bomb was dropped on Hiroshima. A rash of accidents grounded these aircraft through early-November 1945. | ![]() |
